Sound Quality: ★★★☆☆

This performance of La bohème is special because it assembles much of the team from the legendary 1963 production from the Vienna State Opera, including Mirella Freni, Rolando Panerai and Herbert von Karajan.  The relative newcomer is José Carreras as Rodolfo.  Few tenors sang with such exquisite beauty and passion as Carreras did in his younger days.  Mirella Freni exhibits a voice that is still remarkably fresh.  If anything there are some darker shades that weren't evidenced in her earlier outings.  And it is much to the credit of Herbert von Karajan that throughout his career he never lost sight of what a gem this opera is, returning to it often.  The sound is only fair.
